The 2025 General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) took place in Memphis, Tennessee, from July 12–15. The Assembly elected the 2025-28 moderator team to serve the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Cindy Kim-Hengst was elected Moderator. She is a lay leader from Chicago Christian Church in Illinois. Joining her in leadership are Moderator-Elect Steven Gower (Ohio), First Vice Moderator Rae Karim (Indiana), and Second Vice Moderator Bernice Rivera (Oregon).

She couldn't have predicted what would come to define her second act: using her talent in pickleball to help struggling congregations find their voice through DCEF's New Beginnings program.

Church Elder, Judge Beth Heath, who received a community Health Hero Award, retired from the bench in December 2024 and has since established a recovery hub inside Gordon Street Christian Church where she serves as the liaison among the program partners and church to the Health Department. With this ministry, Gordon Street Christian Church supports the work of the 9th Judicial District’s Recovery Court located across street from Lenoir County Health.
