With the completion of Pentecost and Trinity Sunday, worship leaders can breathe a sigh of relief as music programs wrap up and the church enters a quieter season. As I was reflecting on this, I was struck by Rev. Paul Detterman’s blog post “Shade Trees Are Important in the Kingdom” (see the feature article below), in which he quotes Warren Buffett: “Someone’s sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” It is good for us to take time to sit in the shade of a tree and reflect on who has come before us to lay the foundations and nurture the ministry of which you are a part. But we should also consider what shade trees we need to plant for the future. What in your congregation needs to be nurtured? Where is the Spirit moving and leading in your midst? If you are looking for a place to start, how about returning to the foundational scriptures and theology of worship? Whether it’s a single service or a full worship series, I encourage you to make space to talk through the foundations of worship with your worship leadership. After all, if we want a healthy tree, we must attend to its roots. —Rev.
