Week of Compassion reviews 2020 responses | | In our own communities and around the world, this year has been filled with loss and heartache. But as we respond to the needs of a global pandemic, historic natural disasters, and ongoing development projects, this year has also brought countless opportunities to love our neighbors and to show compassion.
You can find out more about the work of Week of Compassion, the Disciples' disaster relief and long-term development fund, on their website. | | | Journal of Discipliana to launch next month | Disciples of Christ Historical Society announces the launch in January 2021 of the Journal of Discipliana, an online only, open access, peer-reviewed journal for original scholarship that explores issues related to all aspects of thought and religious life and practice within the historical or contemporary Stone-Campbell Movement. The general editor, Dr. Mark G. Toulouse, works in consultation with an editorial board of scholars representing a diversity of gender, “racial-ethnic,” and national identity from the three primary streams of the Stone-Campbell Movement: the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the Christian Churches/Churches of Christ, and the Churches of Christ (a cappella). Jim McMillan provides staff support as managing editor. Dr. Rick Lowery, president of the Disciples of Christ Historical Society, is publisher.
Journal issues will be numbered by year, with articles and book reviews added throughout the year as they are edited and approved.
The Journal of Discipliana continues the legacy of the quarterly print periodical Discipliana, which suspended publication after 2013. Manuscripts may be submitted in Microsoft Word to Dr.Toulouse at journalofdiscipliana@discipleshistory.org . | | Top left to bottom right: Cherilyn Williams, Lee Hull Moses, Brenda Rossy, Nestor Gomez, Clyde Hunt, Yvonne Gilmore, Timothy James, Stephanie Kendell, Terri Hord Owens, Belva Brown Jordan, Shannon Pope, and Bill Bailey. New in 2020 for the January – March 2021 reporting period: Alex – Data for Disciples. Gone are the paper forms mailed in January to congregations. Gone is the clunky online form to fill in attendance data averages for the whole year.
This online reporting system is free to congregations and offers features not available in previous modes of yearbook data collection.
1. Congregations can enter attendance and giving data weekly, along with notes, so they can track trends in real time. This info is entered via a web portal, so you can do it from any device that has an internet connection. Even in a year like 2020, there are interesting trends to see. Perhaps your online attendance spiked the week you hosted a special musician. Perhaps your giving peaked just after an email appeal. | | Disciples Peace Fellowship accepting intern applications Disciples Peace Fellowship is now accepting applications for our 2021 Peace Interns! The Center for Faith and Giving observes that December, for many congregations, is the month budget building takes place. It always seems to be a mix of science and quantum physics combined with prognostication, finger crossing, and of course, faith. In the end, after a bit of calculator smoke, financial teams arrive at a forecast for the coming year. When the balance is struck, there is fiscal responsibility and creative imagination in perfect tension.
But in these uncertain times, maybe a "rolling budget" would serve your congregation better. Find out more | | | | More opportunities to put ministry into action
