#DOCjustsummer: Center for Indigenous Ministries & Disciples Public Presence | |
10 And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God. - Leviticus 19:10 ESV
The law maker in Leviticus states guidelines for caretaking to vineyards and farming throughout the text, but within those rules is the rules of caretaking of one another. Center for Indigenous Ministries and Disciples Public Presence are two seemingly separate ministries, though their missions are just as aligned as the agricultural laws in Leviticus.
Center for Indigenous Ministries (DOC) (CIM) is a ministry set to bring greater awareness to Disciples about Indigenous history, justice, and truthtelling in the US, Canada, and beyond. The Center’s (CIM) goal is to have disciples understand their own history with Indigenous Peoples, understand the Christian Doctrine of Discovery, and how settler colonialism influenced Disciple theology. Important to this work is to engender denominational structural change in favor of Indigenous justice in Disciple Congregations, Regions, General Church, and institutions of higher learning.
Disciples Public Presence (DPP) is a Facebook group where Disciples from across the US and Canada can share their justice work and activities. DPP started in 2017, and since then has gained traction in creating a network to showcase justice work as well as learn about justice issues and opportunities to participate in actions and events. The group (clergy and laity) now has over 1,400 members. | | Office closure notification
The offices of Disciples Church Extension Fund (DCEF) and New Church Ministry will be closed on Thursday, August 6 and Friday, August 7 to provide a period of rest and reflection for our staff. We want to give our employees the opportunity to step away from their work and unplug or volunteer with a non-profit, justice/equality organization, or any program they are passionate about. DCEF recognizes that all of the unrest due to social and racial injustice, along with the uncertainty and fear surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and its resurgence, is taking a toll on everyone, particularly our colleagues of color.
We are grateful to the members of our team for their continued dedication to their work over these past few months, and to our partners in ministry for honoring our time away.
All employees will refrain from replying to emails and incoming phone calls during this time. We look forward to being in ministry with you again when we return on Monday, August 10. In case of an urgent need on August 6 or 7, please dial (317) 319-9579 and someone will be available to take your call. | | | | National Convocation schedules online business session for Aug. 15 The National Convocation has opened registration for its 26th Biennial Session virtual business meeting on Saturday, August 15. | | You count!
Future planning by governments, nonprofits and others is directly affected by the numbers from the census, so in spite of the pandemic and because of the inequities in how communities are resourced, General Minister and President Rev. Teresa Hord Owens reminds us that 2020 is a census year in the United States. Fill out the quick form at 2020census.gov to make a difference for your community for the next 10 years!
